FAQ

What are mushroom boards made from?

Mushroom boards are reclaimed planks that were originally used inside mushroom houses. For decades, mushroom boards were often made from cypress because it held up well in the damp environment. As the price of cypress increased, the boards were gradually switched to hemlock. Today, most reclaimed mushroom boards are reclaimed hemlock.

After years of use, the boards develop a naturally weathered patina, color variation, and aged texture that cannot be duplicated with new lumber. Each board is carefully removed, cleaned, and milled for use in interior design and woodworking projects.

Are mushroom boards real reclaimed wood?

Yes. Mushroom boards are genuine reclaimed wood. They come from old mushroom houses that were used for years before being carefully dismantled. Unlike new wood made to look old, mushroom boards have naturally aged over decades and feature authentic texture, weathering, and character that cannot be duplicated.

Can mushroom boards be used on walls and ceilings?

Yes. Mushroom boards are commonly used for accent walls, full wall paneling, ceilings, box beams, built-ins, furniture, and other interior projects. Reclaimed hemlock mushroom boards are especially popular for living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, mudrooms, restaurants, breweries, and retail spaces because they add warmth and character.

Are reclaimed mushroom boards kiln dried?

Yes, we offer kiln drying and in some cases we recommend it. By removing excess moisture you get a more stable product with less seasonal movement.

Do you ship mushroom boards nationwide?

Yes. We ship reclaimed mushroom boards throughout the United States. We regularly work with homeowners, builders, interior designers, and architects across the country. Larger orders often require freight services.

How much do mushroom boards cost?

We carry two different grades of mushroom boards.

#1 has less texture, the edges are more square and thickness is closer to 1”.

#2 has more aggressive texture almost like a typographical map, the edges are rounded slightly, the thickness varies because of the beautiful texture.

We offer board cleaning, kiln drying, straight lining, back planing and shiplap milling. Pricing depends on how much we process the boards as noted above.
